Our Club meets weekly for a luncheon at Pio’s Restaurant, featuring a regular guest speaker. During one meeting, we had the pleasure of meeting two ladies from the First Methodist Church of St. Charles who introduced us to their “Shower of Blessing” outreach project. This initiative supports homeless individuals by providing access to showers, laundry facilities, and hot meals twice a week. Recognizing a meaningful opportunity to contribute, our members eagerly decided to support their mission.

At the subsequent board meeting, we approved funds to purchase food and supplies to assist this project. A dedicated group of seven board members took the lead in planning and executing the initiative. After coordinating with the church representatives, we set dates for our cooking sessions to prepare meals for the homeless community.

The first cooking session took place in January. Our Club secretary purchased the supplies, and on the following Sunday afternoon, four ladies and two gentlemen from our group prepared egg, sausage, and cheese casseroles to be served the next morning. 

While our male food preparation team broke sausage patties into small pieces, our female team members beat eggs for two casseroles. The mixed sausage and eggs were then poured into two large casserole dishes, topped with a layer of shredded Mexican cheese. The church representatives expressed heartfelt gratitude for our contribution to their vulnerable guests.

    Our second cooking session took place in April, shortly after our Annual Spaghetti Fundraiser. Led by our Club president, four dedicated ladies went above and beyond. Besides preparing traditional egg and sausage casseroles, they creatively used frozen leftover noodles from the fundraiser to make additional spaghetti, ground beef, and cheese casseroles, which were very well received. Church members assured us that the delicious food provided was ample for guests to enjoy on-site and take home as carry-outs.

This project cost our Club only $400 in supplies and required 28 hours of volunteer labor. We felt immense satisfaction knowing our efforts positively impacted the lives of those less fortunate. Through our work, we provided three complete meals to 132 vulnerable guests, sharing not only nourishment but also hope and optimism—a reminder that there is light at the end of the tunnel. All it takes is belief in a brighter future.

Our Club members wanted to leave a lasting impact on the lives of those we touched, and we strongly believe our mission was achieved.
